We will be on vacation next week. This has been planned for a while now, and is already paid for, so we are going. I am praying that we will be able to put everything on hold and enjoy it.
For school, it has come time for me to take stock of what is working and what is not. Our current main core for history is Caesar Augustus's World. I have to admit, it is boring my boys terribly. It is packed with information, just maybe too much information (what Octavian was wearing when he went to see his sister, etc). I am trying to think this out. We checked out Drive Thru History from the library and we all seemed to enjoy that, even Daddy.
We have not made the arches yet, hopefully when we get back from vacation. We did experiment in bridges. We took a 4x6 index card and laid it across two books forming a bridge. Then we tried to see how many soldiers (pennies) it would hold before collapsing. It held 23 soldiers.

Then I picked their brain to see what was different about that bridge and the Romans bridge. Finally the light bulb clicked and we made an arch under the bridge with another 4x6 index card. This time there were well over 100 soldiers before it collapsed. Those Romans, they were pretty bloodthirsty but they were ahead of their time in some areas.
Cool bridge experiment! I hope you truly, thoroughly enjoy your vacation and that all cares are forgotten!
